Introducing Golf Lessons Boston (GLB), why it exists
Two years ago, I was about to have my first child. I was about to sell my golf clubs because I never thought I’d play again. The spring before the baby came, my friend took me to his favorite course in Boston. Something happened on that day that made me want to get really into golf. It made no sense that I was going to pick up an expensive and time-consuming hobby.
I hadn’t played in 3 to 5 years previous to that day, and some things had changed in my life. My career had picked up steam and I had become obsessed with finding ways to improve my life. I think through my career, I’d started to build confidence that I could measurably get better at things like my job, golf, and, more recently, getting in better shape.
“How does one change habits?” “How does one get better at something?” “How does one improve mentally?” - these were all questions I was asking myself in other aspects of my life, and golf helped me to find a measurable, fun activity that I could pursue. Today, I think of golf as a testing ground for me to try new things that I can take to my career and other aspects of my life.
Golf is littered with people who continually play, go to the range, and never get better. It’s because getting better at something at a part time frequency is hard. The way the game has been structured has hurt it. There are two ruling bodies that can crown coaches. The coaches often provide help only for members of their clubs, but don’t do much to be ambassadors for the game outside of that. Because of that and many other factors, I feel it’s tough to actually learn how to improve.
There are a ton of tips for people online, like YouTube, but, most of those tips are for people who are already very good. There are a couple of good guides for how to break 100, but not many. It was not until recently that I actually found a book that would help me get better (Better Faster: The Modern Golfer's Blueprint for Getting More from Less). This is the only book I’ve read that provides me with drills to improve and an improvement plan. Why isn’t this type of information more broadly available?!
A couple of years ago Justin and I decided to get better. This year, he and I decided to help others get better as well. We created an Instagram feed and it’s seen solid growth since inception. Today, we launched the blog.
